Luke Dones is a Senior Research Scientist at Southwest
Research Institute's Department of Space Studies
in Boulder, Colorado. His research interests include
planetary rings, the dynamics of comets and asteroids,
and the impact history of the Solar System. He received
a Bachelor's in Physics from Harvard University
and a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of
California, Berkeley. He was inspired to go into
astronomy after seeing the Milky Way from the Andes
while in college. His thesis dealt with dynamical
and photometric studies of Saturn's rings, using
Voyager spacecraft data. After receiving his Ph.D.,
he worked at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical
Astrophysics and NASA Ames Research Center before
joining SwRI in 1999. Luke is a member of the Imaging
Team of the Cassini spacecraft, which will arrive
at Saturn in 2004. He enjoys attending plays with
his wife Christine, hiking with his seven-year-old
son Joey, and discussing whether Pluto is a planet
or a Kuiper Belt Object with both of them.
