Gerhardt Meurer is an astronomer at the Johns
Hopkins University in Baltimore MD where he works
in the Advanced Camera for Surveys group. Gerhardt
was born in Philadelphia PA and grew up at in Shippensburg
PA. He received his undergraduate degree from Vassar
College (Poughkeepsie NY) and the University of
Canterbury (Christchurch New Zealand), obtaining
a B.A. in Physics and Astronomy in 1983. He next
studied at the Australian National University (Canberra,
Australia) and obtained his Ph.D. in 1990 for his
thesis "NGC1705 and the Evolution of Blue Compact
Dwarf Galaxies". During the course of this
work he was gravitationally challenged. Gerhardt
did postdoctoral work at the Anglo-Australian Observatory
(1990-1991) and Universite de Montreal (1991-1993)
before coming to work at the Space Telescope Science
Institute (1993) and finally the Physics and Astronomy
Department of JHU (1994-). Gerhardt's research expertise
is in extra-galactic astronomy and in particular
galaxy evolution and the starburst phenomenon.
When not doing Astronomy Gerhardt spends his time
at home with his life partner Anne McAdam and daughters
Capella and Lyra (who seem to have adjusted to their
names).
