Gerhardt R. Meurer

Gerhardt Meurer is an astronomer at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore MD where he works in the Advanced Camera for Surveys group. Gerhardt was born in Philadelphia PA and grew up at in Shippensburg PA. He received his undergraduate degree from Vassar College (Poughkeepsie NY) and the University of Canterbury (Christchurch New Zealand), obtaining a B.A. in Physics and Astronomy in 1983. He next studied at the Australian National University (Canberra, Australia) and obtained his Ph.D. in 1990 for his thesis "NGC1705 and the Evolution of Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies". During the course of this work he was gravitationally challenged. Gerhardt did postdoctoral work at the Anglo-Australian Observatory (1990-1991) and Universite de Montreal (1991-1993) before coming to work at the Space Telescope Science Institute (1993) and finally the Physics and Astronomy Department of JHU (1994-). Gerhardt's research expertise is in extra-galactic astronomy and in particular galaxy evolution and the starburst phenomenon.

When not doing Astronomy Gerhardt spends his time at home with his life partner Anne McAdam and daughters Capella and Lyra (who seem to have adjusted to their names).
