John R. Dickel was born in New York City. He obtained
a B.S. in physics from Yale in 1960 and a Ph.D.
in astronomy from the University of Michigan in
1964. He joined the faculty at the University of
Illinois in that year and became an emeritus professor
in 2002. He has held visiting appointments in Australia,
the Netherlands, and the Los Alamos National Lab.
His major research interests are supernova remnants
and the interstellar medium.
