I was born and raised in Taiwan. I received a B.S. in Physics from National Taiwan University in 1975, and a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of California at Berkeley in 1981. When I started my graduate study in astronomy with nearly zero background knowledge, I thought I was going to study cosmology. As I learned more about astronomy, I became fascinated by the interactions between stars and the interstellar medium. I have been studying this subject for the last 25 years, using observations at optical, UV, X-ray, and radio wavelengths. I was a soft-money researcher for 12 years. I obtained a regular faculty position in 1997 and am a full professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
